Cloudworks: Uloba's plan and architecture for migrating to Azure and Office 365

Uloba planned migration of its production environment to Microsoft Azure and Office 365, and asked Cloudworks for advice on recommended procedures and architecture for a cloud-based login solution.

We handle a lot of IT infrastructure on our own, but within cloud, we needed assistance in preparing a plan and hybrid architecture as well as practical assistance with integrating Microsoft’s online services. Cloudworks’ cloud and security expertise was perfect for us.

Tom Losnedahl, CIO

Employer of 6,000 assistants

Uloba – Independent Living Norway, is a non-profit organisation that works to promote full equality for disabled people to be able to participate in all arenas of society. Since 1991, Uloba has taken the concept of Citizen-Controlled Personal Assistance (PA) to Norway, and employs nearly 6,000 assistants providing personal assistance to their 1,000 members.

Cloud integration and access control

Cloudworks facilitated a two-day workshop with the customer IT management and developers, focusing on cloud integration, identity management and security. The goal was to discuss opportunities and clarify the scope for Uloba’s planned transition to Cloud services. For example, Microsoft’s cloud platform would allow for increased self-service and easier management of external users – both of which were key objectives for Uloba. In addition, the transition to a cloud-based user directory would require stringent data quality, structure and user workspaces.

Self-developed professional applications

Several of Uloba’s proprietary applications used an existing solution for login and rights management, and the transition to a cloud-based platform had to take that into consideration. It was necessary to look at the technical details: How were the integrations performed, which protocols were used and what information were the applications dependent on. Cloudworks assisted with its extensive experience in authentication and federation. technologies, allowing Uloba to make the necessary adjustments.

Implementation

After drafting plans and architecture, Cloudworks assisted in establishing a hybrid environment where Office 365 and Azure were integrated with the customer’s local infrastructure. This provided Uloba with the flexibility to start the migration process as soon as they were ready.
